May the Fourth be with you. And my dad, too.

His birthday is on May 6th. He'd be 72.

But in January, 2019, he was killed in a freak accident while maintaining a snow groomer for nearby ski and snowmobile trails. Why does that matter? Not only because he was a father and a grandfather. And not just because he was a well-respected firefighter and paramedic who was a legend in backcountry rescue and firefighting. But also because, in his free time, he was doing what he did: help out the community.

At Ability Connection Colorado, we know that May 4th isn't just Star Wars Day, but it's also International Firefighters Day.

Firefighters serving beyond their already heroic duty is something we've grown accustomed to. Their efforts on the job exemplify the best that we can be. Their volunteer time that reaches far beyond their work regularly blows us away. Thanks to firefighters all over the metro area, we get a boost at our events and in our fundraising. With that, we can better serve our community. It's nice to have such stalwart role models in community service.

A service that we'll never forget or take for granted.

Thank you firefighters. It's your official international day but, for us, that's every day. May the Fourth be with you ... so that you're reminded that there's always a force that's with you.

During the month of May, we honor the contributions, sacrifices, and service of the members of the armed forces, past and present as part of National Military Appreciation Month.

The yearly national observance was declared in 1999 and is recognized during the month of May, which also includes other awareness days, including Loyalty Day, VE Day (the end of World War II in Europe on May 8, 1945), Armed Forces Day, Military Spouses Day, and Memorial Day. The month-long recognition honors the U.S. military for all they do to serve and protect our country.

At Ability Connection Colorado, one of the ways we honor all of our service members, police and firefighters is to offer FREE admission to one of our largest special events of the year, the Colorado Concours d’Elegance and Exotic Sports Car Show scheduled on June 9, from 9am to 3pm at Arapahoe Community College.

With proper ID, all military service personnel, police and firefighters can attend the event free of charge! The car show, now in its 41st year, is a family friendly event complete with children’s activities, vendors, live entertainment and over 300 of the most beautiful cars you may ever see!

"What we give families is hope."

That's Patricia Montanez. She's a family coach at Ability Connection Colorado and she joins other teachers, administrators and coaches in this short video to share what is being done to help children understand and navigate growing mental health challenges.

But people want to know, "What is the hope? What's being done?" Here's what we know:

- Mental, behavioral, and developmental disorders begin in early childhood

- 1 in 6 U.S. children aged 2–8 years (17.4%) had a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder

- Age and poverty level affected the likelihood of children receiving treatment for anxiety, depression, or behavior problems

- Early diagnosis and appropriate services for children and their families can make a difference in the lives of children with mental disorders*

That's where we come in. That hope that Montanez and her colleagues deliver is the early intervention that helps children learn to cope and overcome adversity. At Ability Connection Colorado, we know that by the time a child is five, their brain is 90% developed. We know that our time to make a difference is now.

Learn more by going to www.AbilityConnectionColorado.org and thank you for your continued support. It turns our hopes into actions and helps us provide the necessary services to make a world of difference, and get young children school ready.
